Candy Corn Candle

In 3 years of candlemaking I had yet to find a vanilla oil that didn't give me a headache - hallelujah I finally found one and I'm so excited! The sweetness of ice cream, the warmth of fall.  A rich and creamy blend of coconut with mid notes of soft butter and mimosa all on a bed of sweet vanilla and warm Tonka Bean.

99% of corn grown in Iowa is field corn, the classic big ears of yellow dented corn you see dried and harvested in the fall. It’s called “dent corn” because of the distinctive dent that forms on the kernel as the corn dries. While a small portion of field corn is processed for use as cereal, starch, oil and corn syrup for human consumption, it is primarily used for livestock feed, ethanol production and manufactured goods. In livestock feeding, one bushel of corn grows about 8 pounds of beef, 15.6 pounds of pork, or 21.6 pounds of chicken!

Corn is an amazing plant and every part can be useful, not just the grain!  Corn by products are in more than 4,000 grocery store items including shampoo, toothpaste, chewing gum, marshmallows, crayons and paper. Corn stalks are used for animal bedding, stover, and to put nutrients back into the soil for next years’ crop.

Sweet corn is what we eat fresh, frozen or canned. Unlike field corn, which is harvested when the kernels are dry and fully mature, sweet corn is picked when immature.
