Described as incredibly beautiful and the closest thing a Southerner will get to seeing a field of snow, cotton is am amazing and resilient crop. Aside from making fabric, cotton is also a food and a fiber crop. Cotton seed is fed to cattle and crushed to make oil. Cottonseed oil is used for cooking and in products like soap, margarine, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, rubber and plastics.  According to the USDA, farm families as sole proprietors, partnerships or family-held corporations operate 98% of the nation’s cotton farms. Agriculture has seen tremendous advances in recent years. Advances in farming practices have resulted in a reduction of 31% in land use, 82% reduction in water consumption and 38% less energy used in the past 35 years.
